Working in Qatar

In Qatar, Royal HaskoningDHV is mainly providing consultancy and engineering services for port and airport related customers. We have not been involved in construction projects surrounding the World Cup.

Our biggest maritime project was participating in the design of the 26 square kilometre Doha New Port, part of the Qatar National Vision 2030 aimed at economic and social development, for which we signed the contract in 2008. Together with another engineering firm, we made the complete technical design of this port, including three container terminals, which account for six million containers, general cargo, bulk goods, vehicles, livestock and grain. Two years later, the World Cup was awarded to Qatar and construction materials for the stadiums were also supplied via this port once operational.

Related to airports, in 2018 we were awarded the contract to deliver the designs for the long-term pavement rehabilitation of aircraft stands and taxiways on Hamad International Airport – one of the airports also handling the flights with World Cup visitors.

We regret the human rights violations during the construction of the stadiums.

Royal HaskoningDHV respects human rights. We operate internationally, which means that we also work in countries where human rights are respected poorly.

As Royal HaskoningDHV, we do our utmost to avoid doing business with parties that violate human rights in every country and on every assignment. The more organisations follow such line, the more impact we can achieve together.

Each client and potential engagement undergoes a comprehensive risk assessment including human rights compliance. If we cannot carry out the work to our standards, we will not accept a project. Should a colleague discover a possible violation during a project, they will report this to their manager, compliance officer or via our anonymous whistle blower system, which is also open to third parties. We then conduct a careful investigation, determine appropriate measures and discuss this with our customer. If we cannot reach an agreement with the customer, the termination of the business relationship is the extreme consequence.
