The challenge

Committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100% in 2030

In the heart of the brewing industry, where tradition meets innovation, our client is on a journey towards a sustainable future. Their vision has always aimed at sustainability, and now it has a clear SBTI-based goal: Achieve Net Zero scopes 1 and 2 emissions globally by or before 2030. This is one of the industry's most ambitious targets, signalling their unwavering commitment to sustainability. It perfectly aligns with our mission to "Enhance Society Together," and we are proud to collaborate and transform their aspirations into reality.

Achieving net zero: Reduce, Replace, Remove

Royal HaskoningDHV provides holistic solutions, leveraging our extensive history with the client and our expertise in the decarbonisation of breweries.

During the first phase of the program all the best available technologies towards decarbonising the client’s production are considered based on the R3 emission reduction principles: Reduce, Replace and Remove. Our consultants and engineers visited several breweries in Europe, APAC and Africa to collect data, map the local situation and identify energy saving and renewable energy opportunities together with local staff. In the following weeks, the team developed the collected data and ideas into a practical roadmap towards a brewery with zero greenhouse gas emissions. The roadmaps consist of several projects to be implemented in the coming years. Examples include heat integration, process improvements, electrification and using waste streams for energy.

In the next phases, our team will convert the roadmap into design and execution plans supported by budget estimates and project schedules. Engaging contractors and suppliers will be part of the delivery. With the final plans in hand, construction will start, adhering to site-specific technical standards and client-provided data. After commissioning, dedicated handover to the client ensures a seamless transition to operations.

Royal HaskoningDHV proves that aligning global ambitions with local success is achievable through expert engineering in combination with data analytics and project management.

The solution

Towards a sustainable brewery through energy transformation

Our client's energy needs for production are substantial, demanding electricity and thermal energy for brewing. This profile offers challenges and chances to cut carbon emissions while maintaining reliable energy for production. This entails shifting from fossil fuels for steam and hot water and non-renewable electricity without compromising product quality, factory efficiency, or market demand fulfillment. With a commitment to reducing emissions in this energy mix, our client aims to lead the path to sustainability.
