ANWB is not only committed to quick roadside assistance but also has a clear focus on sustainability. ANWB Business Services was faced with an interesting challenge: how do we translate our ambitious sustainability goals into concrete targets for the real estate and facilities divisions? While ANWB's ambition document provided an overarching vision, it still lacked practical guidelines for the specific departments. By working together with ANWB Business Services, we tackled this challenge and developed a sustainability vision that not only concretises the policy but is also widely supported within the organisation.

From ambition to action

The original sustainability policy was drawn up at company level and focused on three specific areas of concern: emissions, circularity and social sustainability. Due to the broad scope of this policy document, it was not immediately clear how the real estate and facilities divisions would be able to contribute to it. Take, for example, the social sustainability ambition to have '0 road deaths' – a goal that is not directly tangible for the facilities branch.

This specific ambition needed to be translated into practice. Our approach started with research into concrete ways of encouraging the use of public transport and working from home. If people do choose to work in the office, our client wanted to facilitate this as sustainably as possible. Therefore our research also focused on using office furniture and facilities as sustainably as possible. In this way, ANWB Business Services contributes to its overarching sustainability goals at various levels.

To clearly formulate and map these strategies, we use the OGSM method (Objectives, Goals, Strategies and Measures) which allows us to transform qualitative ambitions into quantitative objectives. Over two half-days, we had interactive sessions during which we identified objectives, goals, strategies and measures together with five team members from ANWB Business Services. This provided in-depth insight into the specific objectives that ANWB Business Services can achieve in terms of sustainability.

Thanks to these interactive sessions, the strategies were tailored to ANWB's specific needs and ambitions. We identified concrete measurable objectives, developed strategies to achieve those objectives and defined clear KPIs (measures) for measuring progress. This provided a structured framework for implementation and made ANWB's sustainability goals measurable and manageable.

Practical, visual and supported

Instead of an extensive report, we developed a short presentation, fully in line with ANWB's corporate identity. To increase engagement, our approach included three posters which focused on the specific sustainability themes: emissions, circularity and social sustainability. These posters bring together the specific targets for hard and soft services and can be strategically placed on the shop floor, making the sustainability strategy tangible for all employees.

The presentation translated the abstract objectives into measurable KPIs and concrete action plans. Each objective is linked to a responsible person within the organisation in order to ensure that the strategy is actually implemented. This approach results in a compact and supported document that is directly applicable and where ownership is secured.
