In April 2023, the European Parliament approved new legislation under the EU Emission Trading System (ETS). The legislation includes maritime shipping emissions in a welcome attempt to boost decarbonisation in the sector. But what does it mean for shipping companies?
In this business briefing, we’re taking a deep dive into the new ETS legislation on maritime shipping emissions. We answer two key questions:

To do this we undertook a financial cost-benefit analysis – focused on fuel costs, charter costs and expected costs from the obligation to surrender ETS allowances – including examples to quantify the results.
