Royal HaskoningDHV receives SBTi approval on net-zero targets

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved our near (2030) - and long-term (2050) targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions within our global operations. By setting these targets, we are taking responsibility for our climate action and delivering on our purpose of Enhancing Society Together.

SBTi comments: “Your net-zero target is currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process.“

Our net-zero commitment will reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative supporting the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5° C compared to pre-industrial levels. The commitment will be met through the following measures:

  • A reduction of scope 1 & 2 global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from mainly offices by 95% by 2030 and 100% by 2050, from a 2019 base year. We also commit to increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 80% in 2019 to 100% by 2030.
  • A reduction of scope 3 global greenhouse gas (GHG) business travel related emissions by 67% within the same time frame.

The approved science-based targets can also be found in the SBTi approval letter and SBTi certificate.

Direct emissions reductions (decarbonisation) will be prioritised, and all residual emissions (max 10%) will be neutralized (if applicable) in line with SBTi criteria before reaching net-zero emissions.

To get to net-zero within our global operations we are taking the following steps:

  • We stop using fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy.
  • We look to extend our 100% electric car fleet beyond the Netherlands and switch to 100% electric rental cars where possible.
  • We motivate employees to drive electric and choose sustainable transport where possible.
  • We fly only when essential and opt for the lowest carbon flight option.

By adhering to these targets, we are demonstrating our commitment to sustainable growth and we will keep on challenging our clients, peers and partners to do the same.
