Meet Ilse, Senior Geotechnical Engineer

After getting her MSc in Engineering Geology, Ilse joined our organisation. Now, over 25 years later, she still enjoys working here as a senior geotechnical engineer, mainly focussing on dike reinforcement projects. Discover what she likes about her role and our organisation.

Ilse’s journey in our organisation

“I joined Royal HaskoningDHV in 1997 after graduating from Engineering Geology at TU Delft. I started as a Geotechnical Engineer, a role I had for around three years before I started a new adventure abroad. After a few years, I came back to the Netherlands and rejoined the Geotechnical Engineering team at Royal HaskoningDHV. Over the years, I’ve developed myself within this field and also worked for our team in the United Kingdom for a couple of years.”

“An example of a project I’ve been involved in is Dike Improvement Neder-Betuwe where our team was asked for geotechnical input to design a 20 km long dike along the river Waal. Three years ago, I became involved in this project to make geotechnical calculations, and over time, my role developed more towards a design lead. When the detailed design was ready, I became responsible for the handover to the contractor. And as soon as the construction design is ready, I will also be involved in the assessment. It is great that at Royal HaskoningDHV, you can develop into different roles.”

“This is a project I am proud of and have enjoyed working on. In terms of content, it was an exciting project with challenging calculations, new insights and state-of-the-art knowledge. In addition, it was also a nice project team, with colleagues from our organisation and the client.”

Knowledge sharing with colleagues globally

We stimulate our colleagues to open up, connect, and learn from each other's experiences and perspectives. This is also something Ilse experiences: "Within our organisation, we have a knowledge group with all geotechnical engineers. Here, we spend time on, for example, knowledge sharing, knowledge development and the development of tools. This is not only limited to the Netherlands but colleagues in, for example, the UK, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines are affiliated with this.”

“We have an online community in which we can quickly contact each other and are in the process of creating a geo-wiki in which we bundle relevant documents per topic so that you can always find the right standards, manuals and examples within 2 or 3 clicks and can always easily access the right tools. The nice part is that we develop most of our tools ourselves. So, when you have a good idea for a tool, you get a group of colleagues together to make it a reality.”

“We also seek out interaction, for example, in an online coffee moment where we present new projects, tools and ideas to each other. But we don't just see each other digitally because once every few years, we also organise an international geotechnical day where we come together with geotechnical colleagues from around the world to exchange knowledge and experience and to get to know each other better.

Why Royal HaskoningDHV?

“One of the reasons that I still enjoy working at Royal HaskoningDHV after all these years is the personal approach of the organisation. If you want something, they think along. For example, when I wanted to temporarily move to the UK a few years ago because of my husband's work, I was given the opportunity to work for our team there. But there are also many opportunities when it comes to the projects you work on. If you have worked on certain projects for numerous years and want to dive into something new, you can indicate that, and there are many possibilities.”
