What makes working at an Engineering Consultant enjoyable for me, is that you are constantly working with clients from different background and different types of business.

What Camille likes about working for an Engineering Consultant

“During my studies in Civil Engineering in Delft, I began to explore what I wanted to do once I graduated. Did I want to go down the commercial path, or did I prefer to further develop myself in the field? And if I wanted to develop within the field, did I want to do that with a contractor or with a consultancy? Through experiences during my studies, such as my internship and work at a junior enterprise, I came to the conclusion that working at a consultancy company suited me well. So, I did my graduation internship at Royal HaskoningDHV and immediately joined as a Civil Engineer. Something that I still have no regrets about almost eight years later.”

“What makes working as an engineering consultant enjoyable for me is that you are constantly working with clients from different backgrounds and different types of business. You move from one problem and country to another, and with each client, it’s the challenge to understand their problem and develop a suitable solution. Every time you complete a project and add value to a client’s business and society as a whole, it feels very rewarding.”

A range of development opportunities

“What’s great about Royal HaskoningDHV is that every 2 to 3 years, a completely new opportunity comes along. If you proactively think about the direction you want to go in and seize the opportunities that come your way, a lot is possible. I started with design projects in port construction myself, and about a year later, an opportunity arose to travel to a client in the Middle East to clarify our design. So, I boarded a plane to visit the client along with the contractor. From there, things started rolling – about six months later, I went to Jamaica for half a year to act as a linking pin between our design team and the on-site contractor. That was an amazing time during which I learned a lot and further developed my professional expertise. After that, I worked on assignments for various diverse clients, mostly within the maritime sector.”

“I also started delving more into the commercial side, specifically Business Development. I strive to expand it every year and continuously grow my network. Additionally, I’ve ventured into the research direction and am part of an international workgroup focused on developing new design guidelines within one of our fields of work. This allows me to expand my network even further. The combination of the technical aspects, the commercial side, and expanding my network makes working here enjoyable.”

One of Camille’s highlights

After eight years of contributing to various great projects, it’s quite challenging for Camille to pick a favourite. However, if he had to choose one, it would be the Fehrmanbelt project in Denmark, where he has worked as a Project Engineer since 2020. “The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is one of Europe’s most significant infrastructure projects in which the World’s longest immersed tunnel is constructed. As a Project Engineer, I acted as a linking pin and was stationed at the owner’s office in Copenhagen and on the construction site in Røbydhavn. Here, I supported the owner by performing technical reviews of contractor’s design documentation and engaging in quality assurance on the construction site. My technical focus was on dredging, reclamation, and civil works. Moreover, I have been preparing multiple technical assessments for contractual and strategic support to the owner. The key challenge in this project is the project size and its many interfaces. It is a landmark project which comes with great learning opportunity, and which is inspiring to be part of.”

Collaborating for a better future

“The freedom you have to develop yourself and the opportunities to work abroad are not the only things that make Royal HaskoningDHV unique. It’s also the way everyone collaborates that is outstanding. You won’t find any cutthroat competition here; instead, everyone works together, driven by intrinsic motivation, on projects that genuinely aim to build a better future.”

“A great example of working together for a better future is an initiative I started with a group of colleagues about 1.5 years ago. Together, we are substantially increasing our focus on the replacement and renovation of existing maritime infrastructure. Refurbishing an existing structure to get more out of it, rather than building something entirely new, often involves complex solutions. However, these projects truly contribute to emissions reduction and greening the market. Extending the lifespan of existing maritime infrastructure is something I’ve been strongly engaged with lately.”
