Power plant seawater intake and outfall

A private company appointed Royal HaskoningDHV to deliver the detailed design of a two phase (2 x 4.7 m3/s capacity) seawater cooling system required to serve a power plant in Senegal.

Projects facts

  • Location
    Senegal
  • Period
By the end of 2016, ahead of plant commissioning in early 2017.
  • Challenge
To deliver the detailed design of a two phase (2 x 4.7 m3/s capacity) seawater cooling system required to serve a power plant.
  • Solution
We provided specialist design and consultancy services to present a solution that met the client’s requirements both in terms of process and environment for the seawater cooling system.

The challenge

The design was to be completed over a short six-month period to complete construction by the end of 2016, ahead of plant commissioning in early 2017.
The design of the seawater cooling system not only had to meet water quality requirements for plant operations but also environmental regulations to meet dispersion and dilution requirements.

Initial concepts for the system comprised:

  • Offshore intake head structure and pipeline
  • Onshore sediment trap, pumping station pipelines
  • Land transfer and discharge outfall pipelines

The solution

We provided specialist design and consultancy services to present a solution that met the client’s requirements both in terms of process and environment for the seawater cooling system.

Our services to the Client included:

  • concept refining
  • total system hydraulic design
  • hydrodynamic and thermal recirculation modelling
  • wave and sedimentation modelling
  • survey specifications for geotechnical, ambient water and sediment sampling
  • early contractor engagement and cost estimates

The result

Our expertise allowed the client to make informed decisions on the best layout to meet both process and environmental requirements. Future scope included detailed design to allow the appointment of contractors to implement the project.
