Improving Vietnams inland waterways transport

Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport needed to address the navigability for coastal shipping in the Red River Delta in Vietnam - specifically in relation to the Day River and Ninh Co River waterways in order to link the river ports of Hanoi and Ninh Binh with the coastal port of Vietnam.

Royal HaskoningDHV was commissioned to carry out a feasibility study and the design of possible improvement measures for the river mouths and the adjoining inland waterways, taking into account technical, economical, financial and environmental issues.

Royal HaskoningDHV’s project team first carried out an update to the available economic Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) forecast study in the Red River Delta, as well as an update of the studies of navigational constraints. The team also completed a proposal for suitable improvement measures at feasibility level for the river mouths and adjoining waterways, and undertook a review of the feasibility of linking the two rivers via a canal and navigation lock at Do Muoi.

The project team carried out an evaluation of the proposed improvement works, taking into account technical, economical, financial and environmental issues and selection of the most attractive alternative route. A proposal was also provided for methods of financing the proposed IWT improvement works.
