The Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam (STCA) is one of Shell’s three global main research centers. In a newly built wing extension covering a gross floor area of 8.500 m2, laboratories, offices, and training areas were realised in order to accommodate eighty R&D experts of the Rock & Fluid Sciences department.

According to Shell, the end result is an R&D site that “gives access to the best innovation in the world and attracts top talent in order to secure this position in the future”.Under contractual engagement by the General Contractor, we delivered the design and engineering services regarding structural engineering, installations, building physics, civil engineering, fire safety and health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE).

On this Shell site, a detailed safety plan was set-up for the construction activities as well. We have conducted intensive HSSE studies for the design and construction phase. These included amongst others, risk assessments and the set-up of a risk management plan, composition of the HSSE organisation, determination of the client’s and contractor’s responsibilities and the integration of HSSE in the way of work during the construction process (including work plans, work licenses, inspections and audits and disaster management).

We developed a detailed assembly plan for the structure of a steel bridge, above the pipe bridge - the main utility supply between the existing structure of the STCA and the new extension.

This ensured a safe construction and in addition to this the continuity of STCA processes during the construction was guaranteed.
