PD Teesport wished to replace the 800m heavy-duty quay that was approaching the end of its functional life, whilst minimising impact on port operations. The dredged depth also needed to be increased to allow for deeper draft vessels.
A significant amount of work was undertaken looking at potential solutions to the problem of working around the existing structure, managing the balance between demolition and construction costs. Tender documents and illustrative design drawings were prepared to communicate the Client's requirements in terms of berthing, mooring and heavy-duty loading. Our role continued through the construction stage with the provision of site supervision staff along with head office technical and commercial support for the Client throughout the construction period.
The Outcome – Stakeholder Engagement and Minimal use of Resource
- 50,000t of waste material concrete was crushed and re-processed within the port estate. Where possible the crushed concrete was used as fill material within the new structure to raise the bed level for the revetment underneath the structure and to backfill the historic services gallery.
- The third phase of the project will support the ‘Tees Renewable Energy Plant’, a 299MW biomass power station that will generate electricity for the equivalent of 600,000 homes. This section of the new quay will be the sole import terminal for the wood pellet fuel to be used to power the plant.
- Cold ironing pits constructed at either end of the 785m quay has provided the port with the future opportunity to power berthed vessels with shore side electrical power. This will allow vessels to turn off their main and auxiliary engines, removing the need to burn fossil fuels on board the ships whilst docked
