When the lease expired on our office in Amsterdam, we took the opportunity to create a workplace that met our vision for a perfect work environment. We wanted a space which encouraged cross-fertilisation between our world and the world of the ‘makers’ – film and furniture makers, fashion designers, programmers, architects and more. It had to be as circular as possible and energy neutral. 

The new office, ‘Contact Amsterdam’, is a former warehouse and garage which has been converted into a flexible space shared with the community. With facilities for exercise, relaxation and work, it is home to Royal HaskoningDHV’s engineering consultancy team in Amsterdam as well as a mix of individuals and ambitious start-ups. It is inspiring and sustainable while enriching productivity, comfort and wellbeing for users. As well as an area for machines, 3D printers and lathes, there is space for expositions, interactive meetings, video conferencing, music and cinematic events. There are cafes for conversation, brainstorming and relaxation. Communal events, including yoga and workshops, help stimulate interactions, knowledge sharing and co-creation.

Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals

Royal HaskoningDHV has defined Service Levels to measure progress on the company’s sustainability goals. These levels are based upon the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) that aim to make the world a better place by 2030. The SDG’s are adopted by all United Nations Member States since 2015. Contact Amsterdam meets the following SDG based Service Levels: 

  • Affordable and clean energy:
    Creating smart, healthy and energy efficient buildings with re-purposing and sustainability at the core
  • Sustainable cities and communities:
    Contact Amsterdam is a community forming a sustainable ecosystem that fosters collaboration and co-creation.
  • Responsible consumption and production:
    Circularity and re-use of materials are critical principles for us. Through our approach we contribute to responsible and sustainable consumption.

Result

The positive impact of the building on the way we do business, on our employees and on the environment is significant and return on investment measurable. The building material circularity is above 60% and our office is 100% energy neutral. Employee engagement increased by 23%, rising to nearly 70% on the Leesman Index, which is the global standard for measuring employee experience and engagement. Increased client visits have strengthened relationships. Co-creation and events have resulted in many possibilities for visionary crossover projects.
