Capital Diamond Star Group won the tender concession to redevelop the 85 years old Sule Wharves 1 to 4 into modern container terminal. It was critical to inspect the existing structures and estimate the functionality of the wharves.
Our original assignment was mainly to conduct visual assessment of the old jetty structure that define the current status of the structure.
We did the visual inspection on the wharves and as well as from soffit. The inspection was done by marking up the defects with organized onsite photographs. The careful and organized methodology allowed us to prepare the defect maps effectively to eventually conclude about the overall status of the wharves.
The whole inspection and defects mapping was done in two weeks. Defects map include not only the location of the defects but also the clear status (severity) of the defects We presented to the client the results of the assessment in third week. Since the wharves are aging and exceed the design life well, it was not advisable to convert the existing general cargo wharves into container terminal. Instead, we advised to turn the facilities into modern public area comprising museum, galleries, hotels, offices, public parks so that the historical old wharves will be reserved and the people can enjoy the Yangon River and the client’s business case will be efficient at the same time.
