Moray Flood Alleviation in northeast Scotland is one of the largest projects of its type in the UK. MFA utilises the expertise of the Moray Council (Client), Royal HaskoningDHV (Consultant), EC Harris (Cost Consultant) and Morrison Construction (Contractor) in an integrated team. Moray Flood Alleviation’s mission is to alleviate the misery of flooding for communities in Moray and was created as a response to the devastating floods that affected thousands of properties and caused tens of millions of pounds worth of damage during 1990s and early 2000s.
The project will have taken 15 years by its expected completion in spring 2015. The MFA team are providing five flood alleviation schemes in four towns – Lhanbryde, Rothes, Forres and Elgin. These projects amount to a £180m investment in the area by the Council.
The Lhanbryde, Rothes and Forres (Burn of Mosset) schemes have been completed. They have already proven their effectiveness by preventing flooding that would have caused an estimated £11m damage without the schemes.
All of the projects have benefitted from a multi-disciplinary approach and have drawn on the team’s experiences elsewhere in the UK as well as bringing in international expertise. The lessons learnt from one scheme have informed the solutions to the next and this has helped shorten programme times and make substantial cost savings along the way.
One of the key factors in the success of these projects has been the close working relationships within Moray Flood Alleviation and with the local people themselves. Our teams have effectively been absorbed into the communities so we can work from a position of mutual trust. This helps to make sure that the communities have confidence in us and that we ourselves are adding real value to their lives.
