Increased traffic volumes on the N11 in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, were creating a life-threatening situation for scholars travelling from the Model Kloof neighbourhood to Limit Hill Primary School. Pedestrians were crossing the busy N11 at the level of the highway and whilst pedestrian facilities had been constructed earlier, high speeds and heavy vehicles were forcing parents of scholars to drive their children to school instead of letting them walk.

Royal HaskoningDHV was tasked with designing a safe and accessible bridge connecting Model Kloof to Limit Hill. The project scope also included 4 kilometer long barrier-protected surfaced walkway connecting the bridge to Ladysmith CBD. Access to the N11 via side streets was restricted and part of 1st Avenue was convert it to a cul de sac. We identified the need for increased road safety education in the area and consequently designed a road safety themed open space in the bridge’s circular ramp footprint.
