Running throughout Amsterdam International Water Week (AIWW) from 30 October to 3 November 2017, Aquatech Amsterdam is set to be the leading trade exhibition for water technology and the largest meetup of water professionals in the world. Royal HaskoningDHV will be exhibiting at the show with a whole array of innovations from Nereda® to Aquasuite® and much more in our ‘House of Inspiration’.

Look out for our articles over the next few weeks, where we will focus on a different Royal HaskoningDHV products due to be featured at the exhibition. Last time we looked at Nereda, next up its an opportunity to recover a valuable biopolymer. Learn how they all connect together to help us achieve a safe, clean and sustainable water future.

Developing granular reuse

In addition to the energy/chemical saving and phosphate recovery, Nereda technology opens up the opportunity to recover a valuable biopolymer. Nereda’s excess sludge is rich in an Aliginate-like Exopolysaccharides (ALE), a biopolymer mix produced by the bacteria purifying the wastewater. This ALE can be easily harvested and has the potential to unlock economically interesting applications. We spoke to Paul Roeleveld, Business Line Water at Royal HaskoningDHV, about how these can be successfully re-used in a number of applications:

“Alginate-like exopolysaccharides, otherwise known as ALE, is the substance responsible for the granular growth of micro-organisms in Nereda sludge. Properly extracted, it becomes a valuable raw material, with many potential applications. It has the potential to improve water management in semi-arid areas in the agricultural sector. We also recognise fortuitous uses as coating for concrete and in the paper and textile industries and other sectors. We are working with TU Delft, STOWA and some water authorities to further investigate the recovery and reuse of this biopolymer. This is an important step towards making the connection and achieving a circular economy.”

Making connections

Paul Roeleveld wil be presenting at the conference click here to find out more. Making the connection is the focus of this year’s AIWW and we’d love to connect with you in our House of Inspiration, Hall 1, stand number 01.330. We will be showcasing our smart and circular water innovations:

  • Sustainable wastewater treatment technology Nereda®: experience a virtual visit to worldwide Nereda plants in our playroom)
  • Zero-waste crystallization technology Crystalactor
  • Ephyra® and Themista® technologies for optimized sludge digestion
  • Intelligent Aquasuite® solutions for advanced control in the water chain: watch an Aquasuite Smart Water demo every day at 15.00.
