On May 15th, 2018, Young Royal HaskoningDHV Indonesia (YoRI) successfully held the final presentation of Royal HaskoningDHV Indonesia Innovation Challenge 2018 (RIC2018). RIC2018 is an undergraduate research competition, in which we invite undergraduate students to collaborate and innovate for our sustainable future through paper and video. The participants had to develop a breakthrough from our predetermined current issues.

This event raised “Smart Solution and Sustainability” issue with 4 main topics related to industrial, transportation, water distribution, and maritime.

Through this event, we aimed to increase student awareness with the challenges that Indonesia is now facing. We aspire to be a platform for students to raise their ideas and innovation to solve the challenges. Daniel Kurniawan as the chairman of this event said, “as a company whose slogan is ‘enhancing society together’, we are committed to actively develop Indonesia for our brighter future. We believe, only when all stakeholders work proactively and collaboratively, Indonesia can reach its true potential by seizing strategic opportunities and mitigating risks.”

In February 2018, YoRI visited 2 top universities in Indonesia to promote these challenges and build the enthusiasm for the event. At the registration deadline, 23 teams submitted their research proposals and most of them are interested with the transportation challenge. On top of the research paper, participants were also expected to present their ideas in video/animation.

Our experts, who decided which teams deserve a place on the final, are Tim Jeanné (Resident Director of Indonesia & DBU Water Asia Pacific), Marco Piët (Director of Advisory Group Water), Ade Darmawan (Director of Advisory Group Maritime & Aviation), Hans van der Spek (Business Development of Transport & Planning), Bart Lemmens (Director of Advisory Group Industry & Building), and Nasrudin Surya (final presentation). A tight competition led to long and hard discussions but eventually three teams were chosen, these are: Kuya Kuyi Bonbit (Institut Teknologi Bandung), Varuna Makara (Universitas Indonesia), and Anak Jajan (Universitas Indonesia). These teams presented their ideas in our Jakarta office in the final round.

The presentations were very inspiring and interesting. All teams performed their best to convince the judges that they deserve to be the champion. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner for this competition and they are Kuya Kuyi Bonbit (Institut Teknologi Bandung). Their research discusses about an integrated transportation system in Jakarta, which added inland waterways into the equation. The title of their research is “HIT System as a Way to Integrate Multimodal Tranportation Network in Greater Jakarta Supported by the New Jakarta Waterbus. “.The winner is selected because of applicability, innovation, and impact of their idea. Varuna Makara (Universitas Indonesia) comes second with their research on Implementation of Smart Water Network Control as an Alternative to Reduce Non-Revenue Water in Surakarta City; Central Java. Last but not least, the second runner up place was awarded to and Anak Jajan (Universitas Indonesia) who presented their ideas on 3D-printed consumables.

The favorite video is won by Anak Jajan Team because their video got the most like in Facebook.

Our most sincere congratulations for all the winners! We really see a bright future in you. Thank you for all participants. We are looking forward to seeing you in our paths one day!
