“Yes, we need new infrastructure, but we also have to maximise the infrastructure we have, so that we can reap the benefits of what we’ve already spent. There’s an opportunity to maximise our existing infrastructure using technology, to leapfrog challenges, bridge the gap in terms of the information we need to manage our infrastructure better, and to maximise the use and benefit we get out of it.”

So says Sheilla de Carvalho, Business Unit Director: Industry and Asset Management, South Africa, in a TV interview on eNCA.

She was speaking after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address, in which he announced a considerable infrastructure budget.

The challenge, says De Carvalho, is that we don’t know what infrastructure we have or what state it’s in – and you can’t manage what you don’t know.

Using technology, government can start to map its infrastructure and digitally test infrastructure decisions before implementing them.
