Kaumera Nereda® gum, a new bio-based resource, which is extracted from the aerobic granular sludge originating from the Nereda® wastewater treatment process, has been nominated in the Aquatech Innovation Awards in the ‘Innovation – not yet to market’ category.

New, sustainable, raw material nominated for innovation award at industry event | Royal HaskoningDHV

The awards are designed to recognise world-class innovation and technologies that have the potential to disrupt the global water market. Royal HaskoningDHV is delighted its sustainable biopolymer is among the shortlisted entries to be judged the ‘best of the best’ when it comes to new and innovative water technologies. This year a total of 12 innovative technologies have been selected from an impressive number of entries by an expert jury in the lead up to the flagship Aquatech Amsterdam event. Award entries were submitted across four categories, with the jury identifying nominees from each category to be considered as candidates for the overall prize.

Kaumera is a valuable resource and a viable alternative to a variety of oil-based materials. The first large-scale Kaumera production unit has now been officially opened (2 October 2019) in Zutphen, with the second production unit in Epe coming online in Spring 2020. The introduction of Kaumera offers a huge step forward for resource recovery and the circular water economy. Using Kaumera as a sustainable biopolymer decreases the amount of fossil resources and first-generation biomass required. In addition, Kaumera production decreases energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in the wastewater treatment process.

Commented René Noppeney, Global Director of Water Technology Products & Innovation at Royal HaskoningDHV: “Kaumera is an exceedingly versatile raw material with the potential to be used in a host of applications from agriculture and the building sector, through to textile and paper industries. It is an environmentally and economically beneficial product which will help to secure the future through minimising waste and promoting waste reuse.”

Category winners as well as the Overall Winner of the Aquatech Innovation Award 2019 will be revealed at the opening ceremony of the Amsterdam International Water Week and the Aquatech Amsterdam, taking place on 4 November 2019. More information on all nominees can be found here:
