Royal HaskoningDHV’s Specialist Bridge Engineers received a commendation in the specially created Roads and Bridges category at the 2019 CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards for their design and construction monitoring work on The Cornubia Boulevard Bridge that connects the town centres of Umhlanga Ridge and Cornubia in KwaZulu Natal.

The bridge was designed to accommodate eight traffic lanes, including two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, and two pedestrian sidewalks across the N2 highway. Its sheer size meant that careful attention needed to be paid to creating an aesthetically pleasing, elegant structure that blends into the local environment as far as possible.

The bridge is a key part of the massive Cornubia development project, a multi-billion rand integrated human settlement project north of eThekwini and close to the King Shaka International Airport. Forming part of the eThekwini Municipality’s vision for a new transport network that connects the entire city, the bridge project was created to connect previously segregated communities, and to stimulate the local economy and create appeal for investors.

Along with the recent nearby Mount Edgecombe interchange, the Cornubia Boulevard Bridge has helped alleviate traffic congestion and has created easier access for residents, commuters, and businesses to the N2 freeway, the airport, and the Dube Trade Port.

The design team included specialists from eThekwini Municipality, Royal HaskoningDHV and Drennan Mau, who collaborated to address the primary concerns of the project, including safety, serviceability, constructability, aesthetics and low maintenance.
