Effectively combining sensor data and domain expertise for advanced control of wastewater treatment: the Soreq Western Jerusalem plant
The Soreq Valley leaves little room for plant expansions, so complying with ever increasing effluent requirements is only possible with maximum plant performance. A three layer approach - conventional feedback, data driven feed forward and knowledge based heuristics – provides this performance using adaptive machine learning techniques and intuitive control algorithms based on process expertise.
Smart City Solutions
In November 2016, Bolivia was forced to declare a state of emergency as it faced a severe drought. Royal HaskoningDHV responded to implement feasible water supply projects with quick effect, by using its smart water solutions. The project is innovatively cofunded through the Dutch DRIVE financing facility.

Shared ownership for a flood resilient port: Pilot project “Flood risk adaptation in the Botlek”
In view of climate change, we formulated a flood risk adaptation strategy for the Port of Rotterdam, and more specifically the Botlek area. This case illustrates how a fact-based process with stakeholders increases flood risk awareness, gives insight into consequences of flooding and solutions, and creates commitment for future actions.

Creating value with the extraction of alginate-like extracellular polymers from Nereda® sludge
Enhanced micropollutant removal by dosing of PAC in activated sludge
Micropollutants pose a threat for drinking water production from the river Meuse. Dosing of powdered activated carbon into activated sludge is tested at a wwtp, to reduce the discharge of micropolluants. The technology was tested and evaluated with respect to removal performance of micropollutants, effluent toxicology and over all operation of the wwtp.

Tackling the ingress problem in Msunduzi municipal sewer network
Stormwater ingress into municipal sewer systems is a challenge faced by cities using dedicated sanitation systems worldwide. Ingress swallows up available pumping capacity and increases energy consumption, whilst exhausting any spare system capacity of the network and treatment facilities. This paper shows how this problem is being tackled in the Msunduzi Municipality in South Africa.

Engineering the Flood Resilient Airport, 2 case studies
Airports play an important role in economic growth and are essential hubs for connectivity and trade. Following cities, most of the major airports are situated in densely populated areas, next to rivers, in deltas and alongside coasts. Airport flood risk is a growing concern in aviation. Flood resiliency in airport engineering is critical, as demonstrated in the two “climate change” cases of Schiphol Amsterdam and Changi Singapore.

The major challenge in the project for Westfort Meat Products was the wastewater treatment. Discharge of industrial effluent can be allowed by the local authorities; however untreated discharge would greatly exceed the capacity of the local WWTP. The only way to meet the requirements was by applying the new and innovative Nereda® concept.
