Engineering and project management consultancy Royal HaskoningDHV has acquired Dutch-based data science company Ynformed. The strategic acquisition is fully in line with the company's focus on using data and algorithms to translate insights into foresights together with clients and partners.
Royal HaskoningDHV CEO Erik Oostwegel: "Data science is becoming more and more relevant in the markets we operate in. By combining data science with domain knowledge we are connecting the digital with the physical world allowing for better and faster solutions for our clients and society. We welcome the Ynformed team of experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning and data algorithms, who are, just like us, always looking to create a positive impact. They are a strategic addition to our own data science expertise.”
Ynformed is one of Netherlands' first data science companies with the mission to help organisations in the (semi) public domain to innovate and perform better by using data. Their team consists of data scientists, data consultants and data engineers who are excellent in processing data, programming and analyses to deliver actionable insights. Ynformed will continue to operate under its own name and from its office in Utrecht.
Royal HaskoningDHV and Ynformed are creating value already which was acknowledged by the recently won Dutch Water Authorities' Big Data Challenge with their concept to incorporate big data to mitigate the impact of extreme rainfall. A so-called HydroTwin, a digital and living copy of a water system, is able to learn from heavy rainfall events, predict the impact of future rainfall and present solutions to mitigate or even prevent it. "This is very relevant for society because extreme weather will occur more and more due to climate change and flooding has an enormous impact on people, businesses and governments," Erik Oostwegel adds.
Ynformed CEO and Founder Jaring Hiemstra: "We have seen a huge increase in possible applications of artificial intelligence, especially in areas such as water management, health care, asset management, mobility and energy supply. By combining our data science knowledge with the excellent domain knowledge of Royal HaskoningDHV, we expect to be able to realize ground-breaking solutions. HydroTwin is just one example of the breakthroughs that we can realize together. The Ynformed team and I are very excited about the opportunities this will offer us."
No financial details about the acquisition are disclosed.
Since Royal HaskoningDHV launched its new strategy in 2017 with a clear focus on data and digital, the company made important steps to transform its organisation, introduce a new digital way of working, develop new digital services (e.g. BlueLabel, Fastlane) and co-create with clients, start-ups in alliance with YES!Delft, and strategic partners like data intelligence lab HAL24K for solutions with real impact.
This was recognised in an annual review by Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad and Vlerick Business School who ranked Royal HaskoningDHV a Transformers Frontrunner in June 2018.
