With the number of people living in our towns and cities increasing rapidly the quality of our built environment, open spaces and amenities is vital to create places where people want to live and work.
The aim of a Quality Audit is to facilitate the design of a high quality public realm area, from residential streets to parks and other outdoor areas, and from roads to cycle and pedestrian routes to ensure it fulfils the requirements of the end user. A quality environment is vital to encourage private sector investment, as well as providing an attractive place to live and work. Improving street environments also encourages people to walk or cycle rather than use motorised transport and can significantly enhance our quality of life.
A Quality Audit assesses the functionality and safety of publicly accessible open spaces, streets, paths and other facilities. It also ensures that the views of all user groups are considered.
A Quality Audit process includes three types of audit:
- User Group Audit with key user groups ensuring that the needs of all users are taken into consideration
- Road Safety Audit on all stages of design to inform the ongoing process and made available for the Professional Audit process
- Professional Audit process allows representatives from all stakeholder groups to review, discuss and agree on the scheme details. These include urban design, safety, landscaping, lighting, cycling, pedestrian, planning, highways and maintenance. Stakeholder groups include the Local Authority, the design and development teams and key independent challengers (such as safety challengers).
