Can you give us a quick overview of your role?

I’m Sector Director responsible for infrastructure consenting and permitting in the energy, industry and development sectors, with a specialism in industrial environmental consenting and management. I’ve been in this role for a couple of years now, and it involves a lot of working directly with clients on technical work for projects, alongside setting out the future of our business in the sector, and how we go about bringing in new business.

You’ve been with us for nearly 15 years. What have you done in that time, and what attracted you to us in the first place?

I joined the company in 2002 as a Principal Air Quality Consultant. My role has changed a huge amount since then. I took up a role as director of an advisory group between 2006 and 2014, before taking up my current role as sector director. In the time I’ve been here I’ve always been able to retain an element of technical work; it’s good to have a balance of both the technical and management aspects of my work.

Royal HaskoningDHV was the second consultancy I worked for. I’d heard that they were a good company to work for, and from my first interactions with them I found that to be true. The company is full of good people, and it works on good projects. I promote the Dutch influence on the company to our clients, and I think that this is reflected in our culture and the way we work.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

I like the culture that comes from being independent and trust-owned, rather than a listed company. There’s no doubt that this brings about a different way of working. I have a sense of ownership here. I feel part of the company, and I understand our strategy and philosophy better because of that. Our people are also fundamental. Many of my colleagues have become good friends in my time here. The projects remain challenging and interesting, and in the last 14 years I’ve had incredible opportunities to work overseas – in Bahrain, Oman, China, India, Turkey, Abu Dhabi, and Albania to name a few!

What interests you most about the job you do?

I suppose it’s that I’m still able to apply my technical skills on an almost daily basis. The company doesn’t force you along a management route in order to progress. I still enjoy the technical work that I do, and my management experience has given me commercial and communication skills which have been so valuable.

What has been the most inspirational project you’ve worked on in your time here?

I’ve had so many international projects which have been hugely demanding, needed quick turnarounds, and have been challenging but immensely enjoyable. If I had to choose it would be a two-year project in which I was part of a team delivering institutional strengthening to the Ministry of Environment in Albania.  My role was capacity and knowledge building in regulated industries; we toured the Regional Environment Agencies, held joint inspections, training workshops, and I organised a study tour to the UK for 12 Albanian inspectors.  Our own project director had many years of international project experience and was fantastic, I learnt so much from him, including critical analysis and communication techniques which I still use today.

What three words would you use to describe us?

Open, customer-focused and principled.

What opportunities have you had to develop yourself and your career?

There have been numerous opportunities. I’ve become a Chartered Environmentalist in my time here, and I’ve also become an Expert Witness, which means I give specialist evidence in public inquiries and court cases.

I’ve also been given the opportunity to develop our work in the due diligence team – we advise on risks and liabilities to companies on both sides of mergers and acquisitions. I find this side of my work hugely challenging and enjoyable.

What’s the one thing about working here that you value the most?

A real sense of belonging, and a good understanding of our presence in the market and our strategy. Our size and structure allows everyone to play a significant role in the future of the organisation. I also value our strong ethical position and our Integrity Policies.

How would you describe your colleagues?

Professional, supportive and friendly.
