Natural earthquakes pose an extensive geo-hazard around the world. Strong earthquakes can lead to casualties and extensive damage to structures and infrastructure.

For example, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 in Japan (Magnitude 9.1) led to losses equivalent to about $235 billion.

Damage caused by human-induced seismicity has also become more significant in recent years.

These problems are commonly associated with new energy technologies, such as geothermal energy, conventional and unconventional oil and gas production, injection wells, carbon capture/storage and mining.

The Netherlands was considered to be a country with very low seismic risk. Earthquakes triggered by gas extraction in Groningen have changed that perception. In response, seismic-resistant design as well as seismic retrofit has now become a mandatory requirement.

Identifying and quantifying hazards at early stages of projects is important if safer and economic designs are to be produced in a timely manner with an adequate level of risk management.
