By working closely with key clients, developers and specialist contractors throughout the UK, Royal HaskoningDHV has developed extensive experience in the design of low energy building solutions for commercial, educational and industrial facilities and is well versed in the following areas:
Passive building solutions
By involving Royal HaskoningDHV in the project conceptual design at an early stage, we can advise on the potential for providing passive solutions to enhance the buildings environment .For example the consideration of utilising natural ventilation as a sustainable solution for internal climate control. Utilising Natural Ventilation can significantly reduce CO2 emissions and cut energy costs whilst maintaining a comfortable internal environment.
By working closely with the Architect and Structural Engineers, Royal HaskoningDHV can accomplish passive solutions by using materials with extensive thermal mass combined with natural ventilation approach. For example when natural ventilation is utilised overnight during summer, it will draw in cooler air that will be absorbed to keep the building cool during the day.
Building orientation is also an important factor in Passive Design Solutions to limit heat gains via solar irradiation throughout the year. Please see below description of our Building Modelling capability.
Integrated design approach
Royal HaskoningDHV believe that the route to a successful and sustainable building solution involves working closely with all members of the design team, in particular the Architect and Structural Engineers, to produce integrated designs that reduce the amount of energy and thus CO2 emissions buildings consume.
Part L Building Regulations Compliance
Approved Document Part L of the Building Regulations came into force in April 2002 and was revised in April 2006. The four Parts to the approvement document are:
- Part L1A - work in new dwellings
- Part L1B - work in existing dwellings
- Part L2A - new buildings other than dwellings
- Part L2B - work in existing buildings that are not dwellings
During this time Royal HaskoningDHV has provided advice and produced designs ensuring compliance with said documents in the form of SBEM calculations and EPC Certificates.
With Part L set to be revised with even more stringent regulations in April 2010, Royal HaskoningDHV will continue to advise Clients and Contractors alike on the Building Services required to enable compliance.
Renewable energy appraisals
The M&E Building Services team has significant experience in the application of various low carbon or renewable energy techniques and equipment including:
- photovoltaic cells
- solar panels
- wind turbines
- ground & air source heat pumps
- combine heat and power
- utilising waste energy
Royal HaskoningDHV is able to produce a project specific appraisal identifying the potential benefits and methods of producing low carbon and/or renewable energy and reducing CO2 emissions based on site constraints and the client’s preferred options.
The appraisal can include, but are not limited to:
- annual energy savings
- life-cycle costs
- pay back periods
- annual carbon savings
Materials selection and advice
Royal HaskoningDHV, through continuous training and development, have knowledge of materials and equipment that is at the forefront of technology. Royal HaskoningDHV can advise on the selection of materials and equipment with Sustainability in mind without a compromise on quality or performance.
Dynamic Simulation Modelling
Passive building solutions are being increasingly utilised in many commercial and education buildings. Royal HaskoningDHV has the capability of modelling the design of these systems and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the natural ventilation during the critical summer months with a view to ultimately achieving compliance with Approved Document Part L of the Building Regulations.
This modelling can also be used for ‘Sun Path Analysis’ which can assist in the positioning and orientation of buildings at an early stage of new build projects to limit solar heat gains. This modelling can also be used for the positioning of windows to identify the potential for natural light within and the requirements for solar shading during the development stages of project design.
It is important to reduce water consumption, however it is Royal HaskoningDHV’s view that it is equally as important to try to recycle some of the resources available.
Royal HaskoningDHV can offer advice and propose solutions for a number of applications for buildings and developments.
These include but are not limited to the following;
- measures to reduce consumption such as; flow control, proximity control, low volume equipment selection
- rainwater harvesting or grey water recycling
