The largest bicycle parking facility in the world was officially opened today in Utrecht, the Netherlands, by Dutch State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management, Stientje van Veldhoven. Bicycle parking facility Stationsplein, commissioned by the municipality of Utrecht, ProRail and Dutch Railways (NS), offers space for 12,500 bicycles and is therefore expected to be the largest in the world. The three-layer bicycle parking facility offers a smart parking solution for the thousands of bicycles of travellers to and from Utrecht Central, the largest transport hub in the Netherlands. Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible for the integrated design of the concrete support structure and installations for the bicycle parking facility. We also advised on the most efficient and safe cycle routes in and around the parking facility.


Integrated design

Our constructors faced a great challenge: translating Ector Hoogstad Architects’ design into an integrated design, with the roof of the bicycle parking facility serving as the basis for the elevated Stationsplein. The construction must have sufficient capacity for the activities on the square and at the same time offer sufficient capacity for the bicycle shed. The installations designed are practically invisible, with the advantage that cyclists have daylight and an optimal overview in the basement.

With the help of BIM (Building Information Model) we worked closely with all co-designers and took into account the surrounding construction activities such as the station and Hoog Catharijne. This ensured that, even with new wishes and requirements, the construction continued to fit in well with the challenging future plans of the station area.

Accessibility, safety, and comfort first

During the construction process, buses, trams, cars, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians had to be able to reach the station safely. Optimal flow of all traffic flows during construction was therefore essential. The construction was carried out in phases, in which we were responsible for the infrastructure, based on the multimodal transport node concept. Simulations are used to ensure that (temporary) routes fit in with human behaviour, with the aim of ensuring safety and comfort for the traveller.

The behaviour of cyclists has also been taken into account in the bicycle parking facility: from a logical and safe routing through the bicycle parking facility for smooth traffic flow, to sufficient light and sight lines for a comfortable stay. Thanks to the integrated approach, architecture, construction and infrastructure complement each other well in and around the bicycle parking facility. The result is an inner-city bicycle parking facility with an enormous capacity, where cyclists can continue their way comfortably, safely and quickly at the station or in the city.

The Stationsplein bicycle parking facility was created through collaboration between the municipality of Utrecht, NS and ProRail. The parking facility is part of the large-scale construction project for the entire area around Utrecht Central Station. We were also involved in the structural design of the high-quality public transport lane and the impressive roof over the Station Square. This transport lane includes a viaduct, which is part of the bicycle parking facility project.
