10 September 2018. It was a night to remember for Royal HaskoningDHV as they walked away with two wins at the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) Southern Cape Regional Awards held in George on Friday, 31st August. The Level 1 B-BBEE engineering consultancy won awards for work done for George Municipality and Mossel Bay Municipality improving the lives of the communities.
Construction of a new 12,5 megalitre reservoir at the old George water treatment works
The first award was for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement: Institutional and Structural Engineering Project, for the construction of a new 12,5 megalitre reservoir at the old George water treatment works. George Municipality’s new reservoir provides storage of potable water mainly to the indigent communities of Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp. The project is an example of excellent innovation and high-quality infrastructure, in an extremely challenging and restricted area. It is a success story of achievement through teamwork between the client, engineer and the contractor, while the supply to the community could not be interrupted.
Sonskynvallei Phase 2 Human Settlement Project
The company also won the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievement: Project Management and Construction Project for the Sonskynvallei Phase 2 Human Settlement Project. The project was directly linked to the Power Town informal settlement as these residents reside on a flood line and urgently needed to be relocated.
Royal HaskoningDHV was appointed by Mossel Bay Municipality for the design, tender and construction of the project. The steep site topography presented a challenge to the designers to optimise the bulk earthworks design to achieve a solution which satisfies the access requirements and the financial constraints of the Department of Human Settlements Funding Model. The project created numerous work opportunities for the community.
These wins come on the back of successes at the SAICE Johannesburg Regional Awards, SAICE Pietermaritzburg Awards and CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards, all working towards improving the lives of the people living in these areas - Enhancing Society Together.
