The Dutch National Nereda Research Program NNOP has won the International Water Association (IWA) Project Innovation Honour Award 2014 in the category Applied Research. This award is a Crowning Glory for 20 years of Nereda research, development and implementation. With its Nereda Project the NNOP proofed that the golden triangle of private parties, government and knowledge institutes can make a smart water innovation a breakthrough technology with unprecedented potency. Royal HaskoningDHV is one of the founding fathers of the NNOP.

The Project Innovation Awards (PIA) is a prestigious global competition which recognises and celebrates innovation and excellence in water engineering projects. The Europe & West Asia Regional Winners of the IWA Project Innovations Awards were honoured on 25 June 2014 at an awards ceremony in Brussels, Belgium, during the Water Innovation Europe Conference 2014.

NNOP Nereda Project

The NNOP Nereda Project won the Honour Award for Applied Research because of its major achievements for aerobic wastewater treatment. Nereda is an innovative and advanced biological wastewater treatment technology that uses aerobic granular sludge instead of the conventional activated sludge flocs. These aerobic granules enable treatment in plants that are a factor 4 more compact, are significantly cheaper to construct and that consume 30-40% less energy. Thanks to the NNOP the Nereda aerobic granular sludge process is now in operation at several industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants and is outperforming the conventional activated sludge technology in effluent quality, paving the way for the transformation of this innovative technology into the new future standard for aerobic wastewater treatment.
