The Anaklia Deep Sea Port Development is Georgia’s largest sea project of the 21st century. The modern deep-sea, all weather port will bring new possibilities for Georgia to become an industrial, logistics, and innovation hub with new dynamics of development.
It will strengthen Georgia’s position on the Silk Road map, enabling the country to receive the biggest ships and to be a part of the container shipment operations in the region. It will also bring vast employment and economic opportunities for the people of Georgia.

Royal HaskoningDHV, working for the Anaklia Development Consortium LLC. (ADC), prepared the Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) and related procedures, critical habitat assessment (under PR6), air, noise and traffic assessments as well as majority of the management plans for the construction phase of the project.
Our role has also involved supporting on the development of the national Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
Challenges overcome in our work included the protection of rare habitats and wildlife including Ramsar wetlands.
The project was approved by the Government of Georgia in October 2016. Development of the port will take place in nine phases. Phase 1 construction started in December 2017 and will be completed in 2021. Once all nine phases under the framework of the project are completed, the port would have the capacity to serve 100 million tons of freight turnover.

The modern deep-sea, all weather port will greatly improve trade and transport connections to this area around the Black Sea, triggering economic growth and creating job opportunities.
“This is a fascinating project for us to be involved with and we are privileged to be working with Anaklia Development Consortium to help to guide through the planning and assessment stages.”
