A new water treatment facility and distribution network, the Da Bang Plant in Dat Do district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, Vietnam, was officially opened on June 7th 2017 by Mr Joris Janse, Team Manager ORIO, Mr Piter de Jong, Financial Project Advisor from The Netherlands Enterprise Agency, Mr Le Son, Senior Trade Advisor and representative of the Consulate General of the Netherlands, and Tim Jeanné, Royal HaskoningDHV’s Director of Water Business Unit Asia Pacific.

The Da Bang plant is joined by the recently completed Song Hoa water treatment facility in Xuyen Moc district. The operation of these water treatment and distribution network facilities marks the completion of the €10 million Ba Ria-Vung Tau Rural Water Supply project that aims to provide greater access to clean drinking water to more than 100,000 people living in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in south-east Vietnam.

Construction of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Rural Water Supply project began in 2015, initiated by CERWASS and co-financed by ORIO, a funding facility of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project scope was to build complete water supply systems, from raw water intake and water treatment to distribution networks through the Da Bang and Song Hoa facilities.

These two facilities are able to process a total of 25,400 m3 of water per day; 20,000 m3 per day at Da Bang and 5,400 m3 per day at Song Hoa. These capacities and the associated pipeline network provide more than 25,000 homes and businesses in the area – all of which previously had to rely on water drawn from wells and surface water – with access to safe drinking water.

In further encouraging public infrastructure enhancement in Vietnam, ORIO is planning five more such projects within the country. ORIO works with Royal HaskoningDHV, providing feasibility studies and complete design and engineering services during the project development phase, and construction management of the plants and distribution systems and equipment supply in the implementation phase.

Tim Jeanné, Royal HaskoningDHV’s Director of Water Business Unit Asia Pacific, commented, “We are proud and thankful for this special opportunity to work with all project stakeholders, enhancing the quality of life of Vietnamese people in rural areas by providing ready access to potable water. As the country is on the runway to growth, it needs to address essential issues and expand social and economic development across a wider area of the country. Clean water for rural areas is definitely a giant step in strengthening its growth, because people are the engine that drives a country’s progress.”
