Tall buildings are no longer exceptions; they are becoming the preferred modality of the vertical city. Challenges like condensed piled foundations and small footprints are normal practice for Royal HaskoningDHV. Royal HaskoningDHV is responsible for the structural design of about half of the tall buildings in the Netherlands, several transcending 150 meters.

Economic structural designs

Tall buildings have unique challenges like vertical transport, small footprints and heavy loads. Iconic architecture and mixed programmes (residential, office, hotel, retail, and parking) find new ways to the vertical city. Tall buildings are the solution to scarce available space, sensible land use and urban design. Sustainability, efficiency as well as innovative technologies and fast construction methods should be fully integrated into the structural design to achieve an economic building.


Depending on  circumstances and conditions, the structure of tall a building is designed in concrete, prefabricated concrete elements, steel, composite or mixed structures. Load bearing facades are used in several of our structural designs. Royal HaskoningDHV has developed a new and innovative ultra-light building system.


The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has awarded several designs were Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible as structural designer and engineer. In 2013 New Babylon was Finalist of Europe. In 2014 The Rotterdam was Winner of Europe. CTBUH stated "The Rotterdam is an exercise in formal interpretation that is at once reminiscent of an imported mid-century American skyscraper, but epitomizes the off-center experimentalism of modern Dutch art of the foregoing century. Though it is the largest building in the Netherlands, its mass is broken down into three interconnected mixed-use towers."
