Over the next few years the Danish government is commissioning the construction of six 'super hospitals' and renovation of ten existing hospitals for a total sum of six billion Euros, including a university hospital in Aalborg. Royal HaskoningDHV is a member of the Danish-Dutch consortium leading the design.
Danish hospitals are in need of refurbishment and the Danish government has chosen to centralise care in super hospitals. These hospitals will have the most modern technologies at their disposal and will build up expertise that will enable healthcare resources to be deployed more efficiently. The university hospital in Aalborg is the largest hospital in the north of Denmark. Eduard Boonstra, business development director for Royal HaskoningDHV comments; "We were invited to take part in the consortium by our project partners Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects because of our expertise in healthcare design and their experience of working with us on a previous project at the International Criminal Court in The Hague."
Royal HaskoningDHV is responsible for the structural and conceptual designs of the hospital’s building services. Eduard continues: "The design allows plenty of opportunities for us to demonstrate what we can do in terms of architecture, systems, sustainability, building physics and logistics. The design poses an interesting question - how to build a super hospital while retaining human scale, with maximum comfort for patients, visitors and users. As a result we have separated the acute and elective patient flows within the hospital and because of the flexible and compact design, there is room to grow."
Royal HaskoningDHV is also responsible for the BIM data management. The time of the design phase can be reduced with 20% by using an intelligent process. The clients' demands are the starting point of this intelligent process. These demands are 'translated' to requirements (Program of Requirements). All requirements are captured in a database system (BriefBuilder) that is connected with the 3D (revit) design model. Through this connection we are able to verify the design, both on spatial and functional requirements. All data are 24/7 and real time available for the design team, the client and other stakeholders. As a result decisions can be made efficiently.
