Members of the UK maritime team behind the world’s longest non propped spanning flap gate have received a Highly Commended award for Engineering Excellence in the South East from the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The ICE SE England awards, held at the Grant Brighton Hotel, recognise project excellence and individual expertise of its members based in the region. The commendation was given to the world record breaking dock Gate 7 of the Jurong Tuas View Shipyard in Singapore, which Royal HaskoningDHV designed and recently helped install in March 2016.
Senior Civil Engineer Richard Bowman managed the project said; “We are thrilled to receive this highly commended award. At 2700 tonnes and over 110m in length, Gate 7 is approximately 20% longer than any other non-propped flap gate in the world and is operated with only two 65tonne capacity winches. This is a fantastic achievement for all those involved from feasibility stage through to installation.”
“Jurong Shipyard are long term clients of ours and have recently completed the construction and commissioning of Phase II of their new shipyard, bringing the total number of dry docks to seven at this yard. With Phase III of the shipyard in the planning we are proud have designed and installed all seven of their dock gates at this yard.”
Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltd is a leading ship repair, rig repair and shipbuilding company, who required a dock gate which could be operated quickly and as often as twice a week for ship repair works.
As a project of this scale had never been attempted before there were initial concerns if it would be achievable, both in terms of structural capacity and operational practicality, while still being economically practical.
“Despite concerns of it being larger than any previous flap gate in the world, Royal HaskoningDHV went on to design an efficient, safe and fully functional gate which will bring significant economic benefits to the local economy in a sustainable manner.” Richard added.
The new shipyard has created thousands of jobs for the local community and will help to enable JSL to continue to operate efficiently benefiting the local economy and the work force as a whole.
