Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. becomes exclusive provider

Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. and Royal HaskoningDHV signed an agreement that confirms Aqua-Aerobic Systems will become the exclusive provider of the Nereda® granular biomass wastewater treatment system in the United States market.

Aqua-Aerobic Systems will build a full-scale Nereda Granular Activated Sludge Process at the Rock River Water Reclamation District (Rockford, IL. USA). This project will demonstrate the advantages of Nereda; a proven technology that is successfully applied worldwide on five other continents. The facility will help accelerate the implementation of aerobic granular sludge technology in North America.

Nereda represents an evolution in activated sludge treatment replicating the same effluent quality as a well-designed enhanced BNR facility but without the use of chemicals by using the patented aerobic granular sludge technology. The dramatically reduced footprint and low energy requirement of the Nereda process provides a competitive alternative for high performance plants. This makes it an excellent fit for the US market. More stringent water quality requirements strengthen the need for Nereda even further

Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. Vice President - Process Group, James Horton stated, “This unique technology satisfies all of the requirements we look for in a next generation biological process; enhanced biological nutrient removal, lower operational and capital costs, and smaller footprint. This is the game changer the industry has been waiting for.”

Royal HaskoningDHV, Director of Water Treatment Technologies for the Americas, Marten Hillen, stated, “We are proud that a leading player like Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. recognizes the added value of Nereda for the United States. We look forward to jointly bringing our knowledge and expertise here.”

In addition to the license agreement with Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Royal HaskoningDHV has signed teaming agreements with Black & Veatch and with Aecom to develop project opportunities in the United States where the Nereda technology could be applied.
