This year we celebrate the 140th anniversary of Royal HaskoningDHV.
It is a story that began in 1881 in Nijmegen, when two enterprising engineers, Johan van Hasselt and Jacobus de Koning overturned convention and started an independent engineering firm together. It is about two adventurers with a passion for the profession, the drive to make the world a bit more beautiful, and an indestructible belief in progress. We are proud of our striking history and don't want to let this anniversary go unnoticed.
Therefore, each month leading up to our anniversary in October 2021, we will treat you to a new story from our company archives. There are nine stories altogether. They provide a unique insight into the perspectives of the protagonists over the years, and show the ingenuity, friendship and drive that form the basis of our company, both then and now.
In addition to the adventures of two ambitious young engineers who took the profession in a new direction with the opening of an independent office, we will for example be publishing a story about the foreign adventure of Jacobus de Koning in Egypt. He designed a 500-meter-long railway bridge across the Nile for a consortium of foreign investors.

Next to that we will also take a closer look at our relationship with beer brewer Heineken, a collaboration that goes back to 1886. This story shows how many years of work for the Heineken factory site in Rotterdam and a passion for reinforced concrete led to the founding of the ‘United Engineering Offices for Construction and Hydraulic Engineering’ in 1917 by engineers Dwars, Heederik and Verheij (DHV).
