The Mount Nimba export terminal was the final cornerstone of the Nimba iron ore project which aims to develop a very extensive concession in the iron ore-rich regions of Simandou and Nimba in south-east Guinea. The large-scale West-Africa based Nimba iron ore project is located in Guinea but involves collaboration with the neighbouring countries of Liberia and Ivory Coast.

The Challenge

Royal HaskoningDHV’s services were enlisted in 2011 and 2012 to undertake the port location study and design. A site needed to be selected for the construction of a Greenfield port for the export of iron ore. The site location study focused on potential sites in Guinea, Liberia and Ivory Coast.

The Royal HaskoningDHV team conducted a feasibility study as well as basic engineering design and master planning services.

The Outcome

A pre-feasibility assessment of a number of potential port sites was carried out and associated infrastructure was designed by the team. A probabilistic least cost analysis was completed to validate the technical choices made. All documents for a Gate 2 decision were prepared. In order to determine the most suitable location for the port, the Royal HaskoningDHV team prepared basic engineering designs for the jetty, civil works and dredging works. Collaboration with both the rail and handling equipment consultancy teams was essential to the success of the multibillion-dollar investment project.
