In October 2015 Royal HaskoningDHV were instructed by Demir Export (“Demir”) to provide exploration advice and complete a Competent Persons Report for Resources for their grassroots exploration Ulutaş copper-zinc asset, eastern Turkey.

The Challenge

Demir Export are a subsidiary of the Koç Holding Group of companies; Turkey’s largest conglomerate, and are targeting becoming a major global enterprise in mining and metals. With several assets already established and operating within Turkey, Demir are continuing to develop their earlier stage projects. The company’s copper-zinc skarn deposit in Ispir County, Erzurum Province, represented a strategic venture, with the potential to extract and supply copper and zinc to eastern Turkey and north across the Black Sea to growing eastern European and Russian construction industries and markets. Royal HaskoningDHV were commissioned to evaluate the geological works at the project site, estimate the tonnage and quality of the mineral, and provide guidance on how to advance the study to an internationally recognised level.

The Solution

During a visit to the site Royal HaskoningDHV provided recommendations for drilling, sampling and analysing the copper-zinc, to continue to develop the project’s international pedigree. All works were conducted according to industry best practice and the outputs from the drilling and sampling programmes were used as the basis for interpretation of the complex geology and estimation of Resources.

The Outcome

The project culminated in production of a 3D geological model and estimate of metal Resources. The mining team successfully delivered a Competent Persons Report that formally estimated the copper and zinc tonnages and grades in accordance with the international reporting standard JORC 2012. Royal HaskoningDHV helped Demir to progress the project to full Study level, building the foundations for a successful operational mine.

Testimonial from Mr Ismail Cihan, Exploration Superintendent at Demir Export:

"We contracted Royal HaskoningDHV to conduct a Resource assessment of our Ulutaş Copper-Zinc Project in eastern Turkey. The team were continuously diligent and attentive, providing continued geological advice and valuable guidance throughout the project duration. We were impressed with their level of technical mining knowledge and the high quality of their final report, both of which have been integral in helping develop Ulutaş into a successful project. Their genuine desire to help us our path to becoming a globally-recognised mining major means we wouldn’t hesitate in using them again."
