The new Feyenoord Football Stadium in the Netherlands is set to be a striking multifunctional facility designed to increase the finances and fortunes of the club through increased spectator numbers and an improved earning model. The stadium will meet all contemporary regulations, enabling it to host major international soccer matches including the big UEFA and FIFA finals.

Ambitious architecture and tight budget

A large and complex project, the success of the stadium is dependent on audience experience, so a key challenge was to ensure comfort and unrestricted, great views of the pitch for up to 63,000 spectators. Other challenges included the location of the new stadium between a railway and river, its situation on complex substrate, the desire to create the most sustainable stadium in the Netherlands, world-class architecture and a tight budget.

A parametric model was used from the start of the project and proved to be a very useful tool for optimising sightlines from each individual seat to deliver a great spectator experience in an efficient way. 3D visualisations produced from the model ensured stakeholders and decision makers were well informed as plans progressed. The model incorporated integration of the stadium within the wider surroundings, taking into account the roads, river and utility duct, in order to clear out each and every design interface. Parametric modelling has enriched the design process, 3D analysis and easy adaptation of all components in an early design stage has enhanced decision making based on functionality and aesthetics.

The parametric model is also ideal for budget-driven design because it provides early insight into all components and construction cost. Variant studies were run to determine the most efficient approaches for building services, including electricity and plumbing and sustainability measures.

The preliminary design has met the technical requirements within budget, addressed the integrated design, adjacent surroundings and other interfaces, which resulted in the decision by Feyenoord City to proceed with the final design phase.
