The challenge

Royal De Heus is a global top 15 feed supplier and an international organisation with a leading position in the animal feed industry. The client planned to set up their very first animal feed production factory with silos and production tower in Myanmar. The land is located in the north of Yangon, Hmawbi Township.

The full capacity of the feed mill will be 200,000 to 250,000 metric tonnes per year which consist of the production tower, silos and warehouse areas. The entire facility consists of the office, utility areas, support buildings and external works.

Royal De Heus’ regional office is in Vietnam where they have already built several feed mills. Their challenge was to combine the know-how from the Netherlands combined with the experience they have built up in Vietnam in a new country.

Our solution

Royal HaskoningDHV’s presence in both Vietnam and Myanmar allowed for close cooperation between stakeholders in the Netherlands, Vietnam and Myanmar including client, consultant, supplier and contractors. Royal HaskoningDHV was awarded design, project management, construction management and safety management (EPCM) for the greenfield facility. We also provided services to obtain the construction permit and firefighting approval certification for the project. The design was taken care by Royal HaskoningDHV Vietnam while Royal HaskoningDHV Myanmar provided the on ground construction management services.

The outcome

On 1 October 2016 De HeusMyanmar opened their very first feed mill bringing high quality feed to Myanmar. The project was completed on time in 8 months excluding the piling works with no loss time injuries. This is a remarkable achievement for a project in Myanmar. The mill is operating at 50% capacity and has the potential to rapidly expand to meet the expected strong market growth of Myanmar.
