Crucial to the factory design is an integrated wastewater treatment plant. For this, Westfort turned to Royal HaskoningDHV’s revolutionary Nereda® technology which delivers high quality effluent using no chemicals, while requiring less space and energy than conventional installations.

Sustainability pioneers in the pork industry
Westfort specialises in pork production, exporting to more than 25 countries around the globe. The company grew out of two family businesses, each with a long tradition in the pork industry. In 2013, they merged to pioneer sustainability in the meat industry.
The merged company committed to a new, state-of-the-art sustainable meat processing factory in the Netherlands which would be fit for the future. Process automation, animal welfare and sustainable energy solutions were all in the remit for the factory which has a daily processing capacity of around 800 tonnes of pork products.
With high land prices at its location in IJsselstein in the Netherlands, space was at a real premium.
Nereda® wastewater solution is a game changer
The commitment to sustainability and the severe space constraints meant the wastewater treatment solution needed to deliver great operational performance, low costs and high efficiency, as well as being able to process an anticipated 1,250m³ wastewater per day. All this needed to be achieved within as small a footprint as possible.
Royal HaskoningDHV’s innovative Nereda® technology was the perfect solution. It delivers high quality effluent at a low cost, and requires only a quarter of the area of conventional installations.
The Westfort installation is unique in being the first indoor installation of Nereda® technology. Space has been used efficiently so aeration blowers and other equipment have been placed above the treatment tanks and the roof on top is used for employee parking. Integral to every Nereda® installation is a bespoke design and engineering solution to meet the specific demands of the project. Hands on operational support is also a key part of the package to ensure the technology works optimally once it is up and running.
Westfort is making ongoing savings on water discharge bills and its energy costs are 25-50% less than with a traditional treatment plant.
Adoption of Nereda® is increasing across the globe
The advantages Nereda® technology offers over traditional wastewater treatment methods are clear and adoption is rapidly spreading across the world. Already more than 40 Nereda® plants are either in operation or under construction across five continents.
Thames Water, United Utilities and Severn Trent Water are early adopters of the technology in the United Kingdom and, in Ireland, Nereda® is revolutionising wastewater treatment. Three installations are operational and a fourth, to treat the wastewater for the entire Dublin Bay area, is in prospect. Preferred partnerships with GEA, Endress+Houser and Hach were recently announced.
Nereda® is a proven technology for the food and beverage industry with installations in a cheese processing plant and a food and salad factory, among others. For Westfort, this innovative installation addressed the challenges the company faced in terms of location, profitability and sustainability to ensure its meat processing factory is well placed for a sustainable future.
