The challenge

The Thamadahotel in downtown Yangon has been a well-known and long established hotel in the centre of Yangon.

In recent times the hotel has been neglected and rundown until purchased by the GCP group with the intention of renovating the building to reinvent and breathe new life into this long standing building. Turning the hotel into a desirable destination within the existing building structure was the main challenge within this extremely congested site.

Our solution

Working within the confines of the existing structure, we were able to introduce approximately 50% more guestrooms into the building making the development instantly more viable financially. Design was not sacrificed through careful and efficient interior space planning which focused on the end user requirement. The guestroom was designed as an open plan space with minimal solid barriers between living and bathroom but designed to still give the feeling in intimacy. The ground floor café and bar was opening up to the street beyond to provide a welcoming environment in which to wine and dine and provide a visible and tactile connection to the vibrant city life beyond..

The outcome

The rebranded Hotel G has indeed become a destination in this part of Yangon. The funky and thought provoking interior design of the guestrooms juxtaposed against the welcoming bistro style of the cafe bar at the ground floor ensures there is always activity at the hotel either sipping a cocktail from the open plan terrace or checking in and relaxing in the rooms above.
