Working with landscape designer Paul Roncken and artist Wim Korvinus, of the Brabant Knowledge Centre for Art and Culture (BKKC), Royal HaskoningDHV architects has prepared an outline plan for the new N329, the ‘Highway of the Future, commissioned by the municipality of Oss and the Provincie Noord-Brabant.

The plan, commissioned by the Municipality of Oss and the Province of North Brabant, includes a number of special viaducts and bicycle tunnels. It features far-reaching proposals for the landscape and fine art alongside the N329. The aim is to build a road which is CO2-neutral and strengthens local identity. The project was awarded the 2012 National Award for Sustainable Building, the DUBO Award 2013 and the Hier Energie Nul Prize.

The N329 is energy-neutral due to the implementation of various technological innovations. For instance, solar panels produce energy that is used to power water pumps and traffic lights in the tunnels, LED lights and sustainable building materials have been used and the CO2 production during the construction process is reduced and compensated. The design is also sensitive to the surrounding wildlife and to the safety of its users. The local wildlife of the nature reserve Herperduin can safely cross the motorway by means of special nature tunnels while light, spacious and interactive bicycle tunnels provide safe passage for bicyclists.
