Lake Victoria is an important economic asset of to the East African Community. Yet the Lake's transportation network is dilapidated. This project aimed to identify opportunities for enhancing lake shipping activities.
The first phase of the Project entailed piloting a small-scale freight service on the Lake covering multiple ports with purpose-built vessels. Once this first phase is completed, it is envisaged to lead to a larger transport initiative for Lake Victoria including rehabilitation of ports and construction of additional new vessels.
In order to identify the most appropriate set-up for both phases, Royal HaskoningDHV carried out a market study and related technical definition of port requirements including financial and PPP assessments.
The result of the study is a proposed approach for phase 1 and 2, presenting the selected vessel types, proposed operating schedules and related financial plans. Furthermore, the required technical port improvements were outlined and priced. The result enabled the client to make an investment decision for this project.
