Vopak Horizon Fujairah Limited (VHFL) is the leading storage and handling service provider for petroleum products in Fujairah. As part of an overall master plan to increase the berthing and storage facilities north of Fujairah, a large scale reclamation project was started in February 2009 to extend the coastline around the VHFL terminal. In total, a land area of some 5,000m x 500m has been added to the existing coastline.
Royal HaskoningDHV was appointed to provide technical assistance to the management of VHFL in the land reclamation works, including advising on the suitability of reclamation material for future use, assessment of soil conditions and providing recommendations on the structural integrity of existing pipelines and foundation piles. Advice was also provided on the influence that the large area of reclamation would have on coastal processes and the environment.
As a result of the land reclamation works, VHFL wanted to increase the oil storage capacity in Fujairah with the capacity of the associated pipelines and ship berths needing to be increased accordingly. Royal HaskoningDHV was also commissioned to review the tender design and supervise the offshore contract works for this subsequent project.
