Knowing the market from the past, Heineken decided to return to Myanmar to set up a new greenfield brewery in 2014.
This made Heineken one of the first multi-national companies to invest in a large project in Myanmar since the opening of the country. The new brewery would produce 330,000 hectoliters per year upon commissioning. The challenge of the project was to establish a world class brewery in an emerging economy where material and skilled laborwas scarce.
Royal HaskoningDHV in the Netherlands worked together with Heineken to make the concept design according to Heineken standards. The design was then worked out by our office in Thailand who has experience in designing in Myanmar. Royal HaskoningDHV Myanmar then tendered the project and managed the construction with their local team supported by an expatriate project manager and an expatriate construction manager.
In July 2015, Heineken opened their new brewery in Myanmar, producing Heineken beer as well as Regal 7,a locally produced beer using local raw material. The brewery is a show case of a modern facility in Myanmar with high environmental, hygiene and safety standards during and after the construction.
