The first crop of vegetables has been harvested from an innovative method to address the chronic shortage of farmland the world faces in the future.
In partnership with an international team including scientists from Wageningen University, we explored how to ensure the availability of healthy sustainable food for everyone, particularly in heavily populated areas. The solution we are developing is floating food farms, which use water both as an area for farming and as a medium in place of soil. Already in Singapore, where there is little farmland, the cost of fresh agricultural produce is high. By 2050, it is expected the global shortfall in agricultural land will equate to an area similar in size to North America.
Approximately 70% of the earth’s surface is covered in water and floating food farms provide an opportunity to use this area in a more productive way. The produce is grown hydroponically without soil on modular floating platforms which have been produced as sustainably as possible.
