The Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER) was looking to increase refining capacity by 400,000 bpd, and therefore planned to construct an additional refinery at Ruwais in the United Arab Emirates at an investment of US$ 10 Billion.
Royal HaskoningDHV was first appointed by GS Engineering and Construction (GS E&C) of Korea to support their bid for the Marine Facilities work package on the project. Following the success of the GS E&C bid, Royal HaskoningDHV was then appointed to undertake further studies and detailed design.
The challenge was to integrate the design of the marine civil engineering works with the design of the plant and equipment, and structural engineering topside works being undertaken by GS E&C.
The key features of the marine works were to include three berths for 20,000 to 330,000 dwt product tankers (each with a loading platform, berthing and mooring dolphins), a 5.5km long approach trestle with a sea arm and shore arm, consisting of a roadway, pipetrack and service platform, with control building, fire foam tanks and electrical distribution equipment.
Royal HaskoningDHV worked closely with GS E&C throughout the design phase to ensure that a “One Team” approach was achieved. Royal HaskoningDHV placed design liaison engineers into the GS E&C Project Office in Seoul to work alongside the GS E&C team as well as liaising with the Royal HaskoningDHV design teams in the UK.
