The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach suffer heavy congestion and do not have enough containers handling capacity to handle the container flow between Asia and the US east coast. A feasibility study to the construction of a greenfield container terminal with rail and road connections to the US was carried out including conceptual designs, port master plan, cost estimate of all components, as well as a traffic forecast. Furthermore, the possibility to include an LNG import terminal was assessed mainly due to the increased natural gas demand in California in combination with the fact that due to environmental restrictions the development possibilities of new LNG terminals in California are very limited.
