To support the energy demand growth in India, Shell India was planning to operate a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at Kakinada, located along the east coast of Andhra Pradesh, to supply gas to power stations.

In this project the dynamic response of the FSRU and LNGC moored with the FSRU under extreme monsoon environmental conditions and a “cyclonic storm” (as per IMD classification) was calculated. The vessel behaviour was determined for four different layout options. The overall results allowed Shell to further develop the preferred layout.

In previous studies, a static and a simplified dynamic mooring analysis was carried out to determine the line and fender forces under wind, waves and currents. In the subsequent study a more advanced dynamic mooring analysis was carried out. The method used not only calculates the static mooring forces, but also accounts for the dynamic motions of the vessels as well as the interaction of the vessel with the jetty and other moored vessels.

Three successive numerical modelling assessments were done in this study. First, the wave penetration from offshore towards the project location nearshore was calculated using the Mike21 BW model (developed by DHI); secondly the resulting wave forces on the vessels were computed with Harberth (developed by Delft University of Technology). Finally, the motions of the ship and the forces in mooring lines and fenders were calculated with a ship simulation model called aNySIM (developed by MARIN). This study as a whole is also known as “Dynamic Mooring Analysis”.

This study was carried out as a part of a study of environmental conditions and their impact on facility operation: waves and currents, turbidity, sedimentation and dredging, cooling water exchange.
